The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
